This is a chart demonstrating Prof. Louis Agassiz's argument that different races are different species. The origin of each species is defined by the region from which it came, and each species of humanity is shown in a column that includes other animal species specific to that area. Polygenism, the belief in different and unequal human species, was used in the United States as an argument for slavery. From Josiah Nott, Types of Mankind (1855).
