This familiar trademark portrait was first based on a woman named Nancy Green, a former slave who was hired by the R. T. Davis Milling Company to help promote a new pancake mix at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. This story is part of a new one-woman show, "The Mammy Project," which combines the Nancy Green character with other African American historical figures, including the anti-lynching crusader, Ida B. Wells. A link to "The Mammy Project" website is found on the home page of Stereotypes and Society, in the left-hand column.
