When Stereotype & Society first appeared last November, we posted a response to Michael Richards' (the actor who played the Kramer character on The Seinfeld Show) widely disseminated racist tirade against members of his audience.
Now, we've now had the unfortunate opportunity to view the Don Imus tape on YouTube. It's worse than the way it's being reported in the mainstream press. The racist barrage isn't one slip of the tongue, but goes on and on.
Rather than rewrite the same post—with different names and targets of venom substitued—we refer you to the article on Richards that appeared in November. Imus is clearly more of an insider than Richards, and Giuliani and McCain have come forth to announce that they will gladly appear on his show again, but so what? Those chickens are just coming back to roost.
It's an old story, and sadly it is not just about an individual lapse in judgment. It's the story of America, the color line, and about the hatred that seeths beneath the surface of everyday life. See What's Apologizing Have to Do With It? (November 22, 2006).
We don't want to waste any more words or space on creeps like Imus. It all continues to apply. You can redit the original story and fill in the blanks. It's still the same.
